RESEARCH 22.02.2026, 08:19 Call For Applications International Burke InstituteNonresident Fellow Program 2026-2027About the ProgramThe International Burke Institute (IBI) invites applications from early-career scholars for our inaugural Nonresident Research Fellowship Program. This initiative supports emerging researchers working at the intersection of sovereignty, global studies, and contemporary geopolitical transformation through targeted micro-grants that enable academic dissemination and professional development. Selected fellows will receive financial support for specific research outputs and gain a one-year affiliation with IBI, joining an international network of scholars examining critical questions of state sovereignty, deglobalization, and evolving global governance structures. Thematic PrioritiesIBI welcomes research contributions across three interconnected thematic areas: Social-Economic SovereigntyResearch examining economic autonomy, development models, trade relations, labor migration, resource sovereignty, and the social dimensions of deglobalization processes. Technological SovereigntyResearch addressing technological independence, global health governance, ecological sustainability, epidemic preparedness, climate adaptation, digital infrastructure, and the intersection of technology with state capacity and public health systems. Philosophical and Political FoundationsResearch exploring political theory, sovereignty concepts, cognitive sovereignty, informational autonomy, educational systems, knowledge production, and the philosophical underpinnings of state authority and collective self-determination. Interdisciplinary projects connecting multiple thematic areas are particularly encouraged. Grant CategoriesFellows may apply for support in one of the following categories: Conference Participation: Up to $500 USD for registration fees and partial travel expenses to present original research at academic conferences. Open Access Publication: Up to $1,300 USD for article processing charges (APCs) in indexed, peer-reviewed journals. Research Dissemination: Up to $400 USD for preprint preparation, workshop organization, public engagement events, or policy brief production. EligibilityAdvanced graduate students (Master’s level), doctoral candidates, recent PhD recipients (within 5 years), or early-career scholars without permanent academic positions. Research demonstrably aligned with one or more of IBI’s thematic priorities and broader mission on sovereignty and global studies. Applicants from all disciplinary backgrounds and geographic locations are welcome. Application RequirementsSubmit the following materials via email to [email protected]: Research abstract (500 words maximum) explaining how your work relates to IBI’s thematic priorities and the specific output for which you seek support. Curriculum vitae (up to 4 pages, standard academic format). Itemized budget specifying the grant category and exact costs. Supporting documentation (conference acceptance letter, journal acceptance notification, or event proposal, as applicable). Writing sample (optional): one published or working paper in English or French (up to 5,000 words excluding references). Fellow ResponsibilitiesIn exchange for grant support and affiliation, fellows agree to: List the International Burke Institute among institutional affiliations for the supported publication or conference presentation. Provide IBI with a copy of the final publication, presentation slides, or event documentation. Contribute a 500-word accessible research summary for the IBI website. Participate in one virtual IBI research roundtable during the fellowship year. Fellowship BenefitsFinancial support as specified above. TimelineApplication deadline: May 1st, 2026 Notification: June 15, 2026 Fellowship period: July 1, 2026 – June 30, 2027 Grant disbursement: Upon presentation of receipts or invoices (conference/APC) or as agreed in advance (other categories). Note: IBI anticipates awarding 5-10 fellowships in the inaugural cohort. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis after the deadline, and additional fellowships may be awarded until funds are committed. Important NotesFellows maintain complete intellectual independence; IBI support acknowledges financial assistance and intellectual community, not institutional direction of research conclusions. Affiliation listing is subject to applicant’s home institution policies where applicable. Incomplete applications will not be considered. IBI reserves the right to award fellowships selectively based on mission alignment and available funding.
